Akshay Kumar thanks Aamir Khan for his marriage with Twinkle Khanna: ‘She’s promised me that if Mela flops…’

Akshay Kumar is glad in a way that Aamir Khan's 2000 film Mela didn't work at the box office, because that prompted the leading lady Twinkle Khanna to say yes to him for marriage.

Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna met as co-stars on a film set in the 1990s, but she never signed a film after tying the knot with him in 2001. The actor-turned-author later confessed she never wanted to be an actor like her parents, late legendary actor Rajesh Khanna and veteran actor Dimple Kapadia, so she never missed out on that profession after one of her last releases, Dharmesh Darshan’s Mela in 2000, opposite Aamir Khan.

“When her film with Aamir Khan sahab, Mela, was about to release, we were having an affair. So I asked her, ‘Let’s get married?’ But she didn’t want to marry. So, she said she’d marry only if Mela doesn’t work. Everyone believed that Mela would work wonders because it’s an Aamir Khan film, with Dharmesh Darshan as the director,” recalled Akshay.

But as destiny would have it, Mela bombed at the box office. “Sorry Aamir Khan sahab, that film of yours didn’t work. But I got married because of you,” quipped Akshay on Aap Ki Adalat. He revealed that they were shooting separately till 6 pm on the day of the wedding. After pack-up, they got married on the terrace of a friend’s house in an intimate ceremony.

Twinkle Khanna recently revealed at the trailer launch of her upcoming chat show, Two Much, that Akshay Kumar has a codeword for her whenever he wants her to keep quiet — “chashma pehen lo (wear your glasses).” On Aap Ki Adalat, Akshay said, “My wife has no filter. She speaks her mind. When we were newly married, I took her to a trial show of my film. When the producer asked her, ‘Bhabhiji, kaisi lagi aapko film? (How did you like the film)’, she said, ‘It’s a sh*t movie.’ I thought this man would never cast me again.” When he tried explaining to Twinkle to be a bit more diplomatic, she said, “No, I am like this. I’ll call a spade a spade.”

Akshay explained that diplomacy isn’t their only point of dissimilarity. “She thinks left, and I think right. We’re completely different,” said Akshay, adding, “There’s one thing common between us — we both like to sleep and wake up early. So, that has made our life very simple. We also like watching films. We also don’t like parties and going out. So, things begin to match gradually. The 20% similarities are so strong that they make up for the 80% dissimilarities.”

The Jolly LLB 3 actor also revealed that he and Twinkle bond over their love of horror films. “She likes to watch horror films only with me. She feels a little scared, but enjoys it too. But she can’t watch it alone. She always watches with me,” said Akshay.
