Sarfira director Sudha Kongara has admitted in past interviews that she and the film’s lead star, Akshay Kumar, didn’t get along during the initial days of the shoot. In a recent interaction, Sudha revisited this topic, sharing how Akshay delivered his best performance in the film when he was upset after one of his other film’s didn’t perform well at the box office.

Talking to India Today, Sudha explained that their differences stemmed from their distinct approaches to work. She said, “In the beginning I didn’t understand him for six days or something. We had a friction but he isn’t the kind who will shout or get angry. I didn’t mind because I was getting what I wanted anyway and when he is upset and a little low, it’s the best.”

Elaborating on how Akshay excels when he’s upset, Sudha recounted, “The Udupi scene, I remember that his film released the earlier day and it didn’t do well and he was very much attached to the film. He came for the shoot and he was very sombre and we were about to shoot the Udupi scene. It is my most favourite scene of how he has performed it. That scene had a lot of him and he was quiet, intense and it was prefect.” Sudha also revealed that it was the first time Akshay asked for a retake, which he usually never does. She said, “That’s when he asked for retakes and I told him that it was perfect but he insisted saying, ‘That for my sake one more,’ and this has never happened before. That day of grief for him translated into that scene and it was so beautiful.”

Sarfira is the remake of the Tamil hit film Soorarai Pottru, which starred Suriya in the lead role and was also directed by Sudha Kongara. Sarfira has been struggling at the box office since its release, earning only Rs 13 crore within four days. Akshay has been experiencing a streak of box office failures, with recent flops including Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Mission Raniganj, Selfiee, and Ram Setu.
