Aamir Khan went from being a teetotaler to drinking an entire bottle of alcohol in a day after divorce with first wife Reena: ‘I was in deep depression’

Aamir Khan opened up about the importance of coming to terms with one's losses and not trying to circumvent around the concept of grief

Actor-filmmaker Aamir Khan is a rare superstar who has been candid about his love life. In a recent interview, Aamir shared that when he went through his first divorce, with then wife Reena Dutta, he started drinking heavily. He said that for those one and a half years, he couldn’t focus on his work and drank every night.

Aamir shared with Instant Bollywood, “When Reena and I broke, I was in mourning for almost 2-3 years. I wasn’t working or listening to scripts. I was alone at home, and for almost 1.5 years, I drank a lot. You will be shocked to know that I was a teetotaler. After the split up, I didn’t know what do. I couldn’t sleep at night, and I started drinking. From someone who didn’t drink at all, I went to being someone who drank an entire bottle in a day. I was like Devdas, someone who is trying to destroy themselves. I did that for 1.5 years. I was in a deep depression.” Earlier this year, Aamir revealed that he doesn’t drink anymore.

Aamir said that one has to face their losses and come to terms with their reality and shared, “You have to face your losses and accept how important it was for you. Accept that what was once yours is not there now. Also accept how good it was for you when it was there, and how much you will miss it when it isn’t there anymore.”

Reena and Aamir married secretly when he was still new in the film industry. In fact, they kept their marriage under wraps for quite some time. They were married for 16 years and are parents to a son named Junaid and a daughter named Ira. After his divorce in 2002, Aamir married Kiran Rao in 2005. Aamir and Kiran were also married for 16 years, until they divorced in 2021. They are parents to a son named Azad. On his 60th birthday recently, Aamir introduced his partner Gauri Spratt to the media. He said that he feels “settled” with Gauri and when asked about marriage, he said that maybe his age doesn’t allow him to get married now.
