Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025 winner announced; list of awardees here

The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar are conferred in four categories -- Vigyan Ratna (VR), Vigyan Shri (VS), Vigyan Yuva–Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (VY-SSB), and Vigyan Team (VT). The awards aim to encourage excellence and strengthen India’s scientific and technological ecosystem.

The Government of India has announced the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025, the country’s highest recognition for exemplary and inspirational contributions in the fields of science, technology, and innovation. Instituted to celebrate pioneering research and outstanding achievements, the awards aim to encourage excellence and strengthen India’s scientific and technological ecosystem.

The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar is conferred in four categories — Vigyan Ratna (VR), Vigyan Shri (VS), Vigyan Yuva–Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (VY-SSB), and Vigyan Team (VT) — covering 13 domains including Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, and Space Science.

The Vigyan Ratna honours lifetime contributions to science and technology, while the Vigyan Shri recognises exceptional work in specific fields. The Vigyan Yuva – Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award acknowledges young scientists below 45 years who have demonstrated remarkable achievements, and the Vigyan Team Award celebrates collaborative contributions by groups of researchers or innovators.

Nominations for the 2025 awards were accepted between October 4 and November 17, 2024, through the national awards portal at awards.gov.in. The selection process involved a rigorous review conducted by a high-level committee chaired by the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, and included Secretaries of Science Departments, Heads of Science Academies, and domain experts.

Among the awardees, three professors from IIT Madras – Prof. Thalappil Pradeep, Prof. Mohanasankar Sivaprakasam, and Prof. Shweta Prem Agrawal, have been selected for the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025 in recognition of their contributions across diverse domains of science and technology-led innovation.
