The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Durgapur, earlier established as the Regional Engineering College, Durgapur (REC Durgapur), is a public technical university located in Durgapur, West Bengal. Founded in 1960, it stands among the oldest and most respected engineering institutions in India. In 2003, the institute was conferred Deemed University status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). With this transition, it was officially renamed NIT Durgapur and began awarding degrees under its own name.
