Mohali National Lok Adalat disposes of over 23,700 cases, awards Rs 74.86 cr

The fourth and final National Lok Adalat of the year in Mohali saw the disposal of over 23,700 cases through mutual compromise, with settlements worth nearly Rs 75 crore.

The fourth and final National Lok Adalat of the year, held in Mohali (SAS Nagar), achieved significant success by disposing of 23,731 cases out of 24,764 cases taken up, primarily through mutual compromise. Settlements amounting to Rs74,86,12,447 were awarded by various Lok Adalat benches, District and Sessions Judge Atul Kasana said on Saturday evening.

Addressing the media, Judge Kasana said the National Lok Adalat was organised as per the schedule of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), New Delhi, under the guidance of Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra, Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Executive Chairman of the Punjab State Legal Services Authority, and Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu, Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Administrative Judge for the Sessions Division, SAS Nagar.

He said a wide range of pre-litigative and pending cases were taken up during the Lok Adalat, including criminal compoundable offences, NI Act cases under Section 138, bank recovery matters, MACT cases, matrimonial disputes, labour disputes, land acquisition cases, electricity and water bill cases (excluding non-compoundable theft cases), service matters related to pay, allowances and retiral benefits, revenue cases, and other civil disputes such as rent, easementary rights, injunction suits and suits for specific performance.

Judge Kasana said that the Member Secretary, Punjab State Legal Services Authority, also inspected the proceedings of the Lok Adalat benches and actively participated in family court proceedings. “Around 10 couples were reunited during today’s National Lok Adalat,” he added.

For the smooth conduct of the Lok Adalat, 19 benches were constituted at the District Headquarters, while five benches functioned at Sub-Division Kharar and seven benches at Sub-Division Derabassi.

Surabhi Prashar, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, SAS Nagar, said that District and Sessions Judge Atul Kasana had held several coordination meetings with judicial officers and officials from departments such as banks, the electricity department, labour department, and insurance companies to ensure maximum disposal of cases. She said officials were sensitised to identify suitable cases and make concerted efforts to resolve them through Pre-Lok Adalats and the National Lok Adalat.
