NEET UG 2024: Kamlesh Saini bagged all-India rank 50 in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2023 by scoring 710 marks out of 720. He is now pursuing his MBBS from AIIMS, New Delhi.

The 18-year-old appeared for Class 12 exams in 2021 despite the board cancelling them due to Covid-19 and announcing results based on alternative assessments. He wanted to check how much he would score as he was well-prepared. After the situation improved and the board allowed, he sat for this and scored 695/ 700 marks in Class 12 exams in 2021. He took the Classes 10 and 12 board exams from the Rajasthan Board.

However, he could not appear for NEET UG the same year as he was 15-year-old then. The minimum age for NEET applicants is ideally 17 years. This Jaipur boy was a bright student and was directly promoted from Class 2 to Class 5.

Saini said that he decided to do an MBBS and become a doctor when he was in school. He said, “The respect doctors get in society is not incomparable to any other profession.” He will be the first in his family to become a doctor. His motivation behind studying medicine was to help the deprived and improve the condition of his family.

Speaking to the indianexpress.com, Saini shares how he prepared for NEET UG.

How did you prepare for NEET UG?

My NEET UG preparation started when I was in Class 11. I was enrolled in an offline classroom coaching programme at a local institute in Jaipur.

I mainly focussed on the coaching materials and followed the exam pattern and syllabus. After my board exams were over in 2021, I checked the NCERT books. During the last few months, I took the test modules given by the coaching institute.

I did not make notes for all the subjects. However, I made mind maps and prepared flow charts. I used to write the names of chapters on a page and write the topics and sub-topics in a flow chart.

I made sure to minimise the mistakes made in my mock tests. Getting accustomed to the time and taking the test requires skill and efficiency. I ensured completing the test within three hours and attempted the paper in at least three rounds.

How did you approach the NEET question paper?

I attempted the NEET UG question paper in three rounds. In the first round, I addressed the easy theoretical or numerical questions that rely on formulas or rote learning. In the second round, I answered those questions that required some analytical skills. In the final and last round, I revisited those challenging questions that were left unattempted.

Do you feel being a Rajasthan board student was a drawback? Did it make you study everything from scratch for NEET preparation?

I did not find difficulty in preparing for NEET UG with my Rajasthan board background. Although the pattern and scheme of study are entirely different for RBSE and CBSE, the crux of the syllabus of subjects including physics, chemistry, math and biology were almost the same. The underlying meaning and the concepts were similar too. There were many overlaps between the board exam and the NEET UG syllabus.
