The Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) declared the Indian Certificate for Secondary Education (ICSE = Class 10) result on Sunday. Out of top nine candidates sharing rank one in all-India merit list with a score of 99.8 percent; five students are from Mumbai.
Shreya Upadhyay from Bombay Scottish school in Mumbai’s Mahim, said “I was expecting a good score but all-India rank 1 really brought tears.” Currently holidaying in Shillong with her family, Shreya was more than elated knowing her result. Interested in Computers, Sherya is all set to pursue engineering for higher education but she is focusing on taking admission to universities abroad, especially USA. A passionate piano player, Sherya has also played basketball at the inter-school level and wants to tell all students to continue life as it is.
“When I was valedictorian of the school; everybody was asking me if I had stopped all extracurricular activities. In fact, it was the opposite of it. These activities really provide great exposure and experience.” A keen reader, Shreya loves to write poetry. Starting with fiction books, Shreya was really happy to share that she has now started enjoying non-fiction books and is currently reading, “Surely You’re joking Mr. Feynman”, an edited collection of reminiscences by the Nobel Prize-Winning physicist Richard Feynman.
Advay Sardesai from Campion school in Mumbai’s Colaba, had a similar reaction after knowing his score. “After being consistent at studies I was definitely expecting a good score. But an all-India rank 1 is a great surprise. Excited to shift his base to London now along with family, in a few days, Advay is planning to pursue A-level course for the junior college education before taking on his higher education journey. “Both my parents are from finance background but I am really interested in pure science and so would love to pursue mathematics, physics or economics for higher education. I will decide as I move ahead.” A trained guitar player, Advay has been passionately singing in his school choir since a very young age. He also played basketball at school. Principal at the Campion School Cyril Dsouza said, “Advay has been an outstanding performer at various activities in schools while consistently doing well in academics. He is certainly an all-rounder.”
Yash Bhasein From Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane was overjoyed after knowing about his All-India rank. Someone who is really interested in knowing and studying about space, Yash has already started preparing for JEE and wishes to take admission for Aerospace engineering in one of the IITs. “I was in class 8 when I attended a science program arranged by NASA where I discovered an asteroid. Since then I am really interested in knowing more and more about space. I have also participated in various Olympiads,” said Yash who likes to Netflix and chill during free time apart from associating with a local NGO which works in waste segregation.
A travel buff, Yash dreams of visiting as many places as possible with a focus on knowing the culture and history of each of them. “My mother has been my support throughout the board exam year,” said Yash, who already began celebrations with his family and wanted to tell his junior to “Just chill and not lose focus.”
Tanay Shah from Kapol Vidyanidhi International school in Andheri was returning home from a family function when he checked his result in the car and since then his phone has not stopped buzzing. “As soon as I reached home, family, friends from society all came over to congratulate me,” shared an ecstatic Tanay who Plans to pursue CA for higher education after Class XII. “I was a head-boy at school which was a great responsibility while studying for board exams. But it has been a great experience. In fact the extra-curricular activities helped in consistent focus on studies,” said Tanay who feels, OTT, Instagram is nothing but a waste of time and is glad that he kept himself away from it. “I could pursue all my interests along with studies because I kept away from that,” said Tanay who loves to sketch random objects and plays badminton or table-tennis to have fun with friends. One message that he would like to give his juniors preparing for boards is, “Do not hesitate to ask doubts. It is very important to understand the concepts.”
For Hiya Sanghvi from the Childrens Academy school in Malad All-India rank 1 was a bonus on the good score that she was not expecting. “I did study well and did expect a good score but 99.8 is really high,” said Hiya. Even as a regular career choice for most toppers has been to pursue science or engineering or CA; Hiya has chosen a musical path. “I want to make a career in the music industry,” said Hiya, a passionate singer who started learning piano during lockdown. “Now I have also started taking training in classical music,” said Hiya whose interest in music started with listening to Taylor Swift, a favourite pop-artist.
Out of 253 schools across Maharashtra, a total of 27109 students appeared for the ICSE examination. With 27063 of them passing the exam successfully, Maharashtra has recorded passing percentage of 99.83. A slight fall from the 100 percent passing percentage of last year.
