GSHSEB Gujarat Board Exams 2023: 5.91 lakh students register for class 12 exam, highest in 5 years

Registration for Class 12 board exams this year has recorded a five-year high at 5.91 lakh, thanks to mass promotions in Class 10 and 12 by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) in Gujarat in 2021 amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Over 8.57 lakh regular students — 4,90,482 boys and 3,66,722 girls — were promoted in Class 10 state board exams in 2021, the highest number registered so far, leading to nearly one lakh additional registrations in Class 12 board exams starting from March 14. The registrations comprise 1.10 lakh students in the science stream.

As per the GSHSEB records, the total regular registration of 5.91 lakh is the highest in the past five years. Officials said it could be the highest number of regular students to have registered for Class 12 exams so far.

“To accommodate these additional number of students, GSHSEB has roped in extra manpower and made additional infrastructure,” GSHSEB chairman AJ Shah told The Indian Express.

The year 2021 also recorded the highest number of students pass Class 12 with mass promotion of 5.07 lakh regular students, 5.91 lakh registrations for GSHSEB Class 12 exam this time, highest in 5 yrs including 1.07 lakh in science stream.

For Class 12 boards this year, additional logistical support, examination buildings, supervisors and examination staff have been put in place to facilitate the increased number of students appearing for exams.

According to sources, over 500 additional buildings have been arranged across the state compared to previous years. In March 2022, Class 12 Science examinations were conducted in 506 buildings, which has increased to 581 this year.

For general stream, 1,833 buildings have been arranged, an increase from 1,400 previous year, while around 90,000 staff will be deployed, against 80,000 the previous year.

As reported by The Indian Express in January 2022, of the 8.5 lakh regular students who appeared for Class 10 GSHSEB exams in 2021, over 2.6 lakh students or 31 per cent were given mass promotion.

Of these, nearly 9,400 students were awarded over 100 grace marks. As per data accessed by The Indian Express, over 170 students, including 65 girls, were awarded the highest of nearly 200 marks to be promoted to Class 11 in June 2021. The minimum pass marks is 231 — 33 marks each for seven subjects.

In 2020, the overall pass percentage of 7,92,942 candidates who sat for the exams reduced from 66.97 per cent in 2019 to 60.64 per cent. In 2022, this pass percentage was recorded as 65.18 per cent.
