A farmer was seriously injured after being attacked by a leopard in Bhaniya village in Gujarat’s Gir forest early on Monday–the 12th such incident in Amreli district in about two weeks. Two children were killed in the previous attacks.

The incident took place at around 4.30 am in the village surrounded by a thick forest in Khambha taluka and the farmer was identified as Dhirabhai Vala (39). “The farmer was asleep on a cot on his farm when a leopard attacked him. He sustained injuries in his head and face but eventually managed to scare away the carnivore,” Rajdeepsinh Jhala, deputy conservator of forests of the Gir (east) wildlife division, told The Indian Express.

Bhaniya is a revenue village located inside the Tulsishyam range of the wildlife division. “Though he sustained serious injuries in the attack, the farmer was conscious when an ambulance arrived in response to a call,” Jhala said, adding that the farmer had been admitted to a hospital in Amreli, where his condition was reported to be out of danger.

This is the 12th incident of a leopard attacking humans in the district in about two weeks. One child each was killed in such attacks in Karjala village of Savarkundla taluka and Katar village of Rajula talukas early this month. One infant had died after being attacked by a lioness in Khara village of Lilia taluka, also in Amreli district.

“It being the peak summer and carnivores are seeking shelter in millet fields and sugarcane plantations. This is also intensifying man-animal conflict,” Jhala said.
