Hamirsar lake in Bhuj on Sunday. Mayur Pomal Residents of Bhuj, the district headquarters of Kutch, celebrated as Hamirsar — the historic lake located in the heart of the city — overflowed Sunday following heavy rains in its catchment area for the past two days. As is the tradition, the district collector declared a holiday in the town on Monday even as Ghanshyam Thakkar, president of Bhuj municipality announced that the municipality would formally celebrate the event on Monday noon.
Citing a report of the Bhuj municipality, Kutch Collector Amit Arora said Hamirsar started overflowing at 11:42 am Sunday.
Meanwhile, the residents of the town in the semi-arid Kutch region thronged the lake after it started overflowing. According to Kutch district flood control-room in Bhuj, the taluka received 1.64 inch rain on Sunday after 2.36 inches Saturday.
With that, Bhuj has logged 25.48 inches since June 1 this year.
The long-term annual average rainfall in Bhuj is just 17.36 inches. However, this year, the rainfall has already crossed its average mark with almost three months of rainy season to go.
“I bow down to goddess Ashapura, the patron deity of Kutch. Thanks to her blessings, I am getting an opportunity to welcome the overflowing waters of Hamirsar for the second time,” Thakkar, Bhuj municipality president, said, adding he would lead the civic body in formally celebrating the overflowing of the lake on Monday noon.
