The villagers of Uruli Devachi and Phursungi called off their agitation after the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) assured them that they would scout for other sites for garbage processing plants,in addition to that in the two villages.
The district administration has also agreed to the villagers demand of looking into water-related problems.
The villagers had blocked garbage vans from carrying waste to the dumping site and processing plant after a fire broke out on Sunday. They had put forth fresh demands before the civic body of not allowing processing in the village and demanded directed water supply from Khadakwasla dam saying the existing drinking water supply was polluted.
The villagers were assured that there will not be open dumping from May 31 and also more processing plants are being planned at other parts of the city to avoid any load at the plant in the village. The villagers agreed to call off the agitation, said mayor Mohansingh Rajpal.
The civic body was represented by all party leaders and municipal commissioner to resolve the issue as the garbage was piling at the containters install across the city with no place to dispose it,he said.
Rajpal said the civic body has carried out development work in the village as demanded and was committed to improve the situation further.
On the demand of a closed pipeline to village from the dam,he said the civic body could hardly do anything on it as it was related to irrigation department.
