UoP convocation: 52 bag gold medals

Bhakti Ravindra Dange of Sagamner Nagarpalika Arts,D J Malpani Commerce and B N Sarda Science College received this year’s prestigious “The President of India Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal” for the overall performance in academic,extra-curricular,sports and on the occasion of 103 rd annual convocation of the University of Pune (UoP).

Vice chancellor of Central University of Orissa,Koraput Surabhi Banerjee handed over the degrees,diplomas and PhDs to the students. Acting vice chancellor of the UoP Arun Adsool presided over the function.

This year while 56,166 students received degrees and diplomas of the varsity,299 students received PhDs. As many as 52 students got gold medals for best performance in 11 disciplines.

In her convocation address,Banerjee urged the students to be equipped intrinsically and extrinsically to face the global challenges emerged out of recession.

“As the market is uncertain and shaky,there has been an enormous economic meltdown all over the world. Industry is now in the process of evolving new survival strategies. Above everything else,the world is deplorably driven by strife,violence and terrorism. The appalling shadow of insecurity stalks the common citizens of the entire world,” she said.

She advised the students to be mentally equipped to manage an unstructured situation in all spheres of life,with sensitivity and a profound sense of humanity. “Instead of being a compartmentalized or a fragmented individual,make a sincere endeavour to be a complete human being with a holistic approach to life,” she said.

Banerjee urged the students to be different in thinking. “Be unique by virtue of your creativity,your originality,by your own signature tune. Be an innovative thinker,think off beat,act and in a different way so that you make an indelible mark of your own,” she said.

Adsool talked about the various achievements of the varsity and took a brief review of the academic year. He said the varsity had sent re-accreditation report to the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and was expecting the peer team visit by NAAC in February for assessment.

Result of Dr P C Alexander Interuniversity Marathi Elocution Competition arranged by the UoP was also declared during the function. Madhukar Patil of Shivaji University and Amod Nagpure of Mumbai University stood first and second respectively.
