Unsung heroes

The field of anesthesiology has experienced groundbreaking transformations with the turn of the century and anaesthesiologists have become the unsung heroes of the operating room. When facing surgery or any invasive procedure, anesthesia is one of the main things we worry about. Will we feel pain? Will we wake up?

Anaesthesiologists are physicians, who specialise in the prevention and treatment of pain, they ensure that the risks and side effects associated with anesthesia are reduced as well as increase our options for painless,anxiety-free surgery.

Dr Mohan Swami,Consultant ANE,Ruby Hall Clinic Pune says,“Anaesthesiology,as a branch of medicine,is a boon and a precious gift of modern science to the human kind. The anaesthesiologist today is well-trained in all skills required for a person to undergo any surgery safely and without suffering. The development in the science of anesthesiology has a major contributory role in the advances we see today in all fields of surgeries – cardiac, neuro, ortho,or newborns to name a few. Apart from the role in the operation room, they have inherent training of life-saving skills because of which they are playing a major role in servicing ICUs,or CCUs all over the world.”

In the operating room, while the surgeon busies himself with performing the surgery, the anaesthesiologist is the protector of your general well being. The anaesthesiologist is a specialist who will immediately diagnose and treat any critical medical problems, which can affect your life during and after the procedure.

“Pain relief – whether it is labour pain or acute post-operative is very important. It assists terminally ill patients with cancer or other chronic diseases. The anesthesiologist helps in relieving pain and sufferings of the unfortunate ones, making their last journey more tolerable,” adds Dr Swami .

The anaesthesiologist keeps a constant vigil on you during surgery and ensures you have a speedy recovery. As doctors, anaesthesiologists are specially qualified to treat not only sudden medical problems but also other co-existing disease conditions such as diabetes, asthma and hypertension.

The anaesthesiologist’s role is not restricted to general surgery alone. When it comes to childbirth, anaesthesiologists play a crucial role as they carry the enormous responsibility of managing and caring for the mother and the baby. They also help you relieve the most common post-procedure effects such as nausea, vomiting and when required, block your memories of the events which happened during the procedure.
