Jeje Lalpekhlua has become the first player from PFC to lead the national football team in an international tournament, when he was named captain of the Under-22 team for the Asian Football Confederation Championship in Muscat. The tournament that kicked off on Saturday will see India taking on Lebanon. India is clubbed with hosts Oman,Lebanon,Iraq,UAE and Turkmenistan.
The 23-member squad announced by the AIFF boasts of another PFC player the 20-year-old Chennai-born midfielder Dhanpal Ganeshan.
Jeje had moved up the ranks at PFC after his impressive performances for the club. Even though he had met with a serious injury during their I-League encounter last year Jeje had recovered to ensure that he would be fit for the tournament.
Another aspect at the PFC is that Jejes recovery from his injury was well monitored and the team had full faith in his capabilities to bounce back.
Jeje was initially signed up when the club manager Dr Ashok Kumar saw the Mizoram-born player at a camp in Goa.
Derrick Pereira, head coach PFC senior team, says that he is happy that Jeje and Ganeshan have been selected in the national squad.
Jeje has always been one of our main players in the starting line-up during our games in the I-League. His naturally attacking style along with his calm approach to the game makes him an asset for any team. Ganeshan too is one of our better players. We are all happy for them. They have been groomed well.
Interestingly,Jeje was the first ever player to be signed by PFC when incorporated in 2007.
Likewise,Ganeshan is one of those within the PFC ranks who moved up from the Under-19 level. In fact,Ganeshan was the first junior to make it into the senior PFC team after he signed in 2010-11.
Born in Vyasarpadi,Ganeshan made his I-League debut for PFC seniors against Churchill Brothers in an away game in 2011-12 season.
Chirag Tanna,PFC head operations, said,We at the club are happy that Jeje and Ganeshan got selected into the national team and wish them luck in doing India proud.
The under-22 probables camp that had kicked off in New Delhi at the beginning of the year with 77 players. The number was later pruned to 44.
There was another camp, which began on May 15 and ended on May 31. The list was further cut to 30,after which the final squad of 23 players for the tournament was named on Wednesday.
