Two labourers were electrocuted at an illegal ice candy factory in Hadapsar on Wednesday afternoon. Police have arrested the owner of the factory for culpable homicide by not making any arrangements for safety of workers. The owner of the plot where the factory is located was detained.
The labourers,Vinodsingh Rajput from Uttar Pradesh he used to live on the premises of the factory and Ramu Thakur from Bihar who was a resident of Adarshnagar in Moshi area,were electrocuted at a tin shed in Malwadi in Hadapsar where ice candies were manufactured illegally,police said. Police have arrested the Prabhuram Chunnilal Kadwasara,who ran the factory.
Senior inspector Pandharinath Mandhare of Hadapsar police station said,About eight persons worked at the factory and no safety measures were in place. Live wires were hanging overhead and labourers were made to plug in machines into electric switch boards that were damaged. Rajput received a shock as he plugged in two leads of open wire. Thakur who went to rescue him also received a shock. They were declared dead at Sassoon Hospital.
Investigation revealed that Sachin Tupe,who owns the space had taken the power connection for domestic purpose from MSEDCL,but was using it for commercial purposes.
Mandhare added,Tupe had not notified PMC that the space was being used for commercial purposes. No permission was taken from Food and Drug Administration for running the factory. The factory was running illegally.
