Trance-versal talk

While cynics describe this musical genre as nothing but loud noises to which youngsters dance with gay abandon, supporters of trance music swear by the fact that it takes the listener to a new heaven.

For DJ Sean Tyas, trance music allows fans to display their wild, creative side

While cynics describe this musical genre as nothing but loud noises to which youngsters dance with gay abandon, supporters of trance music swear by the fact that it takes the listener to a new heaven. And while both groups clash over who’s claim is truer,DJ Sean Tyas quietly puts his fingers to work on the turntables, making audiences around the world groove to his own style of fusion trance music.

“Trance is a form of music that enables fans to vent out all their energy on the dance floor. And unlike house or techno,it is more psychedelic and allows more room for expression,” says DJ Tyas when quizzed about trance music. An animation student by profession,Sean stumbled onto trance music in the year 2001. “Back then,I was more into production and just got the equipment to try out mixing as a hobby,” he muses about his chance beginning in this field.

Sean, who is in town to perform for the November Sunburn Tour at the One Lounge,as a part of the prelude to the Sunburn Festival,to be held next month, appears visibly excited about his maiden tour of the city. Speaking more about his upcoming performance,he says,“The beauty of trance music is the fact that it’s not planned. It’s more of an impromptu thing, where you need to see the mood of the crowd and play accordingly. Having said that,it’s not like it isn’t hard work; a wrong tune can not only end up killing the mood, but also ruining the performance. So,one needs to judge the crowds right before playing in front of them.”

Propagator of something known as the Tyas Sound,Sean is a known face on the European and North American party circuit. About his unique sound style,he says,“It’s basically a heady mix of old school trance music from the early 90s,which has been remixed and re-produced with modern techniques to give it a totally new dimension, sound wise.”

Tyas does have his favourites when it comes to performing in front of live crowds. “The Argentineans are probably the most fun lot of all the people that I have played for. They can even inspire the harshest of dance critics to come and join them on the floor. The sheer vitality that they display makes them one of the best audiences ever. As far as Europe and North America is concerned, the trance music scene in Europe is much more developed in comparison to North America but the crowd in America are definitely wilder in comparison to their European counterparts.

So what does the trance guru expect from his first-ever performance in the city? “Probably a lot of wacky youngsters turning out in large numbers to set the dance floor burning,” he says. “On a more serious note, since it’s my first time in India,I have come with an open mind and I do hope that the audiences come up for the event in hordes, you know, just to fill those blanks,” he adds,tongue-in-cheek.
