While studying at the Sinhgad College of Engineering,Aditya Shrotri was one of the better students in the class but he had never topped. However, this year,he became the all India topper in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE),the results of which were declared last week. Aditya, who did his Bachelor’s in Engineering from the Sinhgad College of Engineering, topped the entrance exam with an overall score of 90 out of 100. “I had never, before this, topped my class. In fact,I did not even get a first class in BE!” he says.

However,he feels that he performed the way he did in this exam because it was based on applied learning. “What we are taught in colleges usually encourage rote learning, something I was never very good at. However, the GATE exam takes into account our knowledge in applied sciences. Someone who has an interest in that is bound to do well,” he adds.

Not only did he secure an overall score of 90 out of 100,but he also secured 1000 out of 1000 on the scaled score. Did he expect such a good score? “The paper had gone off really well. However,I had not expected my results to be as good as this. I am ecstatic as getting the first position in an exam for which more than 1.5 lakh students appeared is a big deal,” he says with a beaming smile. “I plan to pursue MTech, either from one of the IITs or IISc – Bangalore. I am also trying to get admission in a few colleges in the US. Lets see how things go,” he adds.

A total of 7,77,134 candidates registered for GATE 2012 out of which 6,86,614 candidates appeared for the exam. A total of 1,08,526 candidates qualified the exam this year and the Delhi zone topped the listing.
