The shoe story

A new store for couture footwear brings delicate pieces that flaunt heavy designs inspired by rainbow colours

The new store on the North Main Road stretch can easily be missed. From outside,it doesn’t look anything like you would expect a couture shoe shop to look like — no fancy display and no ornate lighting. But once you enter the shop,Nidhi Bhandari Fine Couture Footwear, royalty seeps in. The store, which was launched on Friday, spells chic. Floors polished such that one can see one’s own reflection, white walls with golden wallpaper and two big vintage chairs with footstools are all that accessorises the store.

The focus is clearly on the display of their latest couture footwear collections. Bhandari has designed two different ranges to cater to the varied tastes of her prospective clients — Rococo Funk and Autumn Splash.

Inspired by fashion trends from the late Baroque,an artistic movement that developed in France in the 18th century,Rococo Funk includes cones, wedges, flats and pumps. The patterns vary from ballerinas to peep-toes with ankle straps and heavy gold detailing. The use of black and nude suede gives a vintage look to the collection.

Autumn Splash features all the colours of the rainbow, sometimes in a single pair. Mostly flats in sandals and ballerinas, the collection is made of patent leather keeping in mind the city’s weather conditions. Patent leather is believed to be more waterproof, and it is also a natural choice for many designers making bright-coloured products. Apart from sandals in neon colours,Bhandari uses bright-coloured stones in floral and random patterns to adorn the footwear. Some of the pieces in this collection feature a fringed strap,in neon colours, running horizontally across the middle section of the foot. The highlight of this collection are the wedges with colourful stones adorning their broad heel.

Bhandari also offers custom services including size-alteration,heel and design modification, and is also open to taking orders from customers who may want a pair to be specifically designed.

Despite the heavy designs and delicate look, the pieces are comfortable and light on the feet. But Bhandari is clear that they are couture and meant to be worn only on occasions where the spotlight will be on them — thus justifying the big bucks they cost.
