According to some nursery owners,the sale of ornamental plants like petonia,salvia,lantenna,bouganvilla,dianthus,alamanda,Sonchafa have gone up in the last two weeks.
The green colour has a soothing effect on the eyes. The water plants emit by the process of transpiration has a cooling effect in the house. Keeping plants in the house in summer is a very good idea, said Mangala Rao,renowned city-based bonsai maker. Most of the nurseries near Manjari on Pune-Solapur highway,attract attention of passersby with the flowering plants in full bloom.
Generally,summer is a slack season for sale of fruit,vegetable seedlings,pots,fertilizers but the business of indoor ornamental plants has gone up remarkably, said Sunita Kamble,manager,Sakshi Nursury on Solapur Road.
SD Mahajan,well-known botanist,recommends indigenous indoor plants for summer. Indigenous indoor plants like begonia,some species of balsam,ficus,indoor species of cycus can be grown as they suit the environment and adds to freshness. There are not may indigenous indoor plants as we never had a tradition of growing plants inside home. There is a need to work on Indian plants that can be used for indoor decoration, he said.
