Tailor-made Style

Designer Nivedita Saboo’s second store in the city offers couture customers the space and comfort of trying out various looks and variations at leisure

A sprawling bungalow in one of the quiet bylanes of Kalyani Nagar works as an idyllic setting for designer Nivedita Saboo’s second store in the city. Wrought iron lamp stands, antique wooden side tables, plush carpets and vintage photo frames give the place a charming, inviting look.

Just beyond a reception at the store’s entrance,Saboo displays formal,semi-formal and clubwear for men as well as her signature sarees. A room off the main area has hangers lined with jackets in a gamut of styles along with a rack full of her collection of scarfs and stoles featuring digital print. Walking up the winding staircase (think old English movies) takes one to a lobby connecting two more sections of the store. On the right is a room where men can pick fabrics from a stack, pore over design books and browse through a displayed collection of sherwanis and coats. The other end of the lobby flaunts Saboo’s bridal wear section, which is synonymous with her label.

“We have a selection of fabrics and ensemble options that we style in a variety of fits and cuts. I sit and consult with my clients, ideate and understand their personal preferences,so that I can style the best fit, cut, colour and accessory to reflect their personal style and identity while adding panache to their outfit. Our ‘Indian’ and ‘Trousseau’ section for men is also in the same bespoke men’s lounge. We want to make sure our customers experience their clothes, right from selecting the fabric to being involved in the design process,” says Saboo, who also makes handcrafted shoes.

In the bridal wear section,Saboo experiments with a range of silhouettes that are traditionally Indian but influenced by European styles. She has introduced neons while moving away from conventional shades of red. The trousseau collection includes glamourous lehengas and innovative cholis, anarkalis with beads and crystal detailing and floor-kissing cocktail dresses. Another section of the store is dedicated to the fashion needs of relatives of the bride and groom. It displays anarkalis with glittery details, heavy borders on the cuffs and the hem, gowns and also sheer saris which are mostly net-based. “Our intention was to model the store reflecting a customer’s personal walk in wardrobe. Giving our couture patrons the space and comfort of trying out various looks and variations was the primary reason we have trial rooms in each section. The design lounges also cater to different genres of clothing,” says Saboo.

The designer has also set up a quaint garden cafe behind the store where she can sit down with her patrons and discuss their fashion requirements over a cup of tea,and maybe a cupcake or a slice of pie too. “It gives me the best setting to spend quality time with my clients when they visit and browse through the collections on display,” she says.
