Vama Collection ,a saree shop in the city ,located on Laxmi Road, landed in the net of octroi department of the Pune Municipal Corporation for paying less octroi on sarees that were worth Rs 2 lakh. PMC has slapped a fine of Rs 51,000 to the shop-owner.
As per the press release issued by the octroi chief Rajendra Muthe,21 sarees had been sent to Vama from Rangoli Designs Pvt Ltd from Kota in Rajasthan. These sarees had been dispatched by a courier service overnight. The price of these sarees had been shown as the Rs 19,000 and Rs 4,96 octroi had been paid as octroi amount. However, the flying squad of the octroi department nabbed these sarees when they got a tip off. When the octroi staff verified the prices, they came to know that the original price of the total merchandise was over Rs 2 lakh and not Rs 19,000.
Meanwhile,it was just a day ago that the civic octroi department had slapped a fine of Rs 45.15 lakh against the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL) for evading octroi on a transformer to the tune of Rs 1.56 crore.
Muthe said that in this case,a vehicle carrying an electricity transformer had sought an escort pass saying that it was going to Chakan. Escort pass is sought when vehicles just wish to pass through the city to another destination and are therefore charged just nominal charges.
Muthe said,”Even after seeking escort pass, our octroi inspectors Amar Koli and Prakash Marathe spotted the carrier in Kharadi that was being unloaded. The transformer was then seized. We have slapped a notice against the transmission company for evading octroi and also a fine of Rs 45.15 lakh.”
