(Express Photo) In an alleged pursuit for supremacy, at least 16 undertrial prisoners lodged at Yerwada Central Prison in Pune clashed with each other, pelted stones and hit each other with iron sheets on Monday morning, the police said Tuesday.
As mentioned in the FIR, the inmates also punched and kicked each other, causing a major ruckus inside the jail.
The clashes came in the backdrop of quarrels and disputes in the past over the same issue, the police added. The incident took place between 10 am and 10.30 am at circle number 3 of barrack number 8 inside the Yerwada jail.
Jail officer Hemant Ingole lodged the first information report (FIR) in this case at the Yerwada police station. Based on Ingole’s complaint, the police have booked 16 jail inmates under Sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 143 (unlawful assembly), 144 (unlawful assembly with deadly weapon), 147 (rioting) and 148 (rioting with arms) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The police have identified the accused as Prakash Yevale, Pranav Randhir, Vijay Veerkar, Sachin Dalvi, Mukesh Salunke, Ganesh Waghmare, Aditya Chowdhary, Kiran Galfade, Suraj Randive, Akash Shingare, Vishal Kharat, Rupesh Akhade, Rohit Jujgar, Shubham Rathod, Anurag Kamle and Mehboob Shaikh.
Police sub inspector Ashok Kate, the investigating officer, said all the accused are lodged in the jail under judicial custody. “There have been quarrels between them even in the past,” he said.
