For the past 84 years, the College of Engineering Pune’s (CoEP) boat club has churned out events with passion and diligence. The annual Regatta is one which is eagerly awaited by students. This year,Regatta 2012 – Row To Win will be held on January 22. The days leading up to D-day will be marked with rigorous practice sessions. Six rowing formations have been lined up for this year’s event.

As a mark of tradition,12 types of boats,in the formation of an arrow, will inaugurate the Regatta. “This arrow formation will showcase different kinds of boats which are used in the races,” says Krishna Potdar,a member of the Regatta managing committee,CoEP. The inaugural formation will be followed by the Shell Games, which is an aquatic adventure of dazzling shell boats speeding along the waters of the Mula river to create amazing ripples. “The shell games were known as the diamond formation earlier,” says Bhushan Bankar,a third year Mechanical Engineering student and a participant of last year’s Regatta.

The Kayak Ballet will be a pulse quickening adventure of sleek, streamlined and critically balanced kayaks gliding over the surface of water with perfect timing and synchronisation. The Canoe Works will be the depiction of a story through fireworks from the boats. “The story is a surprise only to be revealed on the final day. Otherwise,it is packed with loads of excitement and offers daunting challenges for those who dare,” says Jayesh Zope, chief coordinator of Regatta.

Another event to look forward to is the display of rhythmic calisthenics with mashals at the Mashal Dance. “The punt formation, which is exclusively for freshers, will be a vibrant display of thousands of glamourously lit bulbs, gracefully evolving to create different shapes,” explains Bankar.

With over 450 participants,Regatta promises to be bigger and better this year. “We have put in immense efforts to bring out the best,” says Shruti Sonwane,an Instrumentation student at CoEP. Sonwane and her team mates have been practising twice a day for over three months now. “Rowing requires stamina. The more we practice, the better we will perform,” adds Zope.
