A One-Day refresher course on total knee replacement was conducted by Dr Neeraj Adkar and international expert Dr Wolfram Kluge at Aundh recently. A discussion on the subject was also held with a panel of orthopaedic surgeons. A live surgery to understand the total knee arthroplasty using computer navigation was conducted.
Kluge performed the surgery on the subject at Sai Shree Hospital and around 100 orthopaedic surgeons and general practitioners from various cities and towns participated, said a press note.
Dr Adkar said,”This is a unique educational programme covering the latest advances in the field of knee replacement, product discussions and a live surgery. Total knee replacement surgery is an established surgery. Results are predictable; implant designs and quality are time-tested,so acceptance has gone up. With the decreasing cost of implants and surgery, total knee replacement is likely to be as common as cataract surgery, among the elderly lot,he said.
Knee replacement is a surgical procedure which improves the quality of life in patients who suffer from severe arthritis. The latest advancement is Minimally Invasive total knee replacement which involves the use of a smaller incision than the one used in traditional knee replacement. In the traditional method, the incision averages 8 to 10 inches in length. In minimally invasive knee surgery, the incision is only 4 to 6 inches long. Because of the small incision there is less damage to the surrounding tissue. The patient faces less post-operative pain and the speed of recovery is fast, the note said.
