The incident highlights pressure building on Pune police after several recent instances of prisoners escaping . In the last five months,at least five prisoners, including Yogesh Raut,a prime suspect in the Nayana Pujari murder case, have fled from police custody and cops who were escorting them had to face legal action.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (headquarters),Shirish Sardeshpande, said,“We have 250 personnel for escorting prisoners. Just from Yerawada jail, about 200 inmates are sent daily to various locations. Every week, two to three undertrials are taken out of the state and 10 to 15 are taken out of the district,” he said.

“ As per the police manual,at least two policemen have to escort an accused. We had given four policemen with Mangrule,as it was a murder case. We appreciate the cops who risked their lives to nab him,” said Joint commissioner Sanjiv Singhal.
