Maj Gen. V Ravishankar has taken charge as commandant of Command Hospital,Southern Command with effect from July 4. He replaces Maj Gen. S S Panwar.
A cardiothoracic surgeon,Maj Gen. Ravishankar is a graduate of Delhis Maulana Azad Medical College. He was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in January 1978. After a stint as RMO in J&K,he went on deputation to Oman as a medical officer from 1981-84,an official release said. Thereafter,he did an MS (Surgery) from Armed Forces Medical College,Pune,and served with the IPKF in Sri Lanka as Surgery Specialist. He completed MCh in Cardiothoracic Surgery from MH (CTC),Pune,and underwent further training at Portland,Oregon,USA and Perth,Australia.
During his career in the Army Medical Corps,the general officer has held many prestigious positions such as Professor & HoD,Cardiothoracic Surgery,at Army Hospital (Research & Referral),and MH CTC,Pune. He was also Deputy Director General of Medical Services (Personnel) at Army HQ before assuming the appointment of Commandant,Command Hospital (SC),Pune,after promotion to the rank of Maj Gen,a release said.
