‘No half-hearted measures, quota should be for all Marathas,’ says quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil

Jarange-Patil said he will not send a delegation to Mumbai for discussion. “If we send a delegation, the members will have ‘bhajias’ and ‘gulab jam’ and then hold a brief for the government... I don’t want that to happen,” he said.

Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil Monday rejected the Maharashtra government’s invitation to hold discussions in Mumbai over the quota issue.

“Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil called me and said the government has accepted the first report of the committee on Maratha reservation. Accordingly, Kunbi certificates will be given from tomorrow. I have told them whether you accept the first report or the second report, you can’t give reservations to only those whose records have been found. The government will have to give reservations to all Marathas, be it Kunbhis or other Marathas… We will not accept a half-hearted reservation,” Jarange-Patil told reporters in Antarwali Saraati village where his fast unto death entered its sixth day.

However, after pressure from villagers, Jarange-Patil Monday consumed a few sips of water even as he struggled to speak to the media.

Jarange-Patil said he has told the government to call all district collectors for a meeting in Mumbai and provide Kunbi certificates to all Marathas.

Jarange-Patil said he will not send a delegation to Mumbai for discussion. “If we send a delegation, the members will have ‘bhajias’ and ‘gulab jam’ and then hold a brief for the government… I don’t want that to happen,” he said.

“I don’t know whether the chief minister has informed the prime minister or not… The prime minister did not speak anything about the agitation for reservation during his Shirdi rally last week,” he further said.

Meanwhile, the Maratha agitation for reservation turned violent Monday with a mob pelting stones at NCP MLA Prakash Solanke’s home in Majalgaon taluka in Beed district and torching several of his vehicles parked there.

Hundreds of members of the Maratha community blocked the Dhule-Solapur highway by burning tyres in the morning. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) suspended its services in nine districts, mostly in the Marathwada region, after its vehicles were targeted by stone-pelters in a few districts.
