Punekars spend a week in traffic annually: Pune among most traffic-congested cities
The data raises concerns about the city’s infrastructure and urban planning. To address this, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and traffic authorities have devised a “no-cost traffic management” strategy.
Manoj Patil, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Pune, said, “We are focusing on increasing the road-carrying capacity of approximately 20 key routes across Pune. This initiative aims to improve travel speed and enhance the quality of life for Punekars.”A recent report by Statista has revealed that Pune ranks among India’s most traffic-congested cities, with residents spending an average of 28 minutes to travel 10 kilometres. This places Pune alongside Bengaluru as cities with the longest average travel times, while New Delhi reported 22 minutes for the same distance. The data highlights that Punekars spend nearly a week annually stuck in traffic.

Ajay Aggarwal, convener of My Pune Dialogue and director of community service, TMCF, proposed dividing solutions into short-term and long-term goals, emphasising the complexity of the issue. “There is no single solution to traffic congestion,” he said.
For immediate impact, as citizens play an active role in enforcing traffic rules, Agrawal suggested, “Maintaining law and order is not just the responsibility of the police but also of the citizens. Policing each other can bring immediate improvements.”
For long-term solutions, Agrawal urged the PMC to ensure that roads are fully functional and capable of handling increasing traffic volumes. He also highlighted the need for improved public transportation and sustainable urban planning to address the root causes of congestion.
The PMC’s strategy and collaborative efforts aim to provide relief to Punekars, who face daily challenges due to the city’s growing traffic woes. As authorities and residents work together, it remains to be seen how effectively these measures will transform Pune’s roadways.
