Partly cloudy conditions are likely to prevail in the city on Wednesday and the city skyline will remain clear thereafter till November 10, predicted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) even as it forecast the onset of winter in the city from the second week of November.

As the city seems to be becoming warmer, the IMD said the maximum temperature of around 31-32 degrees Celsius is normal for this time of the year. “This is moderate daytime temperature. It is feeling warmer because the atmosphere still contains some moisture. Look at the sky and you will see cumulus (clouds that are puffy and white like cauliflowers) and other clouds. You don’t get clouds like this if there is no moisture in the air,” said Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at IMD.

The Met department said that the weather in Pune is going to remain the same for the next few days—with the maximum temperature likely to be around 29-30 degrees Celsius—and the sky will be partly cloudy on Wednesday but it will be mainly clear after that till around November 10 in Pune and its neighbourhoods. Chances of light to very light rainfall are likely during the next few days.

The IMD had put many districts in Maharashtra under yellow alert due to the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning and squalls. Currently, there are no warnings for any district till November 10.

Pune can start looking forward to the onset of winter. The passage of western disturbances that brings moisture from west and move towards east cause snowfall in the western Himalayan region. The northerly winds that blow via Western Himalayan Region, such as Jammu- Kashmir and Ladakh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, become stronger during the winter months between November and March. These are likely to reach central India and North and central Maharashtra—even Pune—by early second week of November. “Once the clouds move away and the sky becomes clear, we can expect a gradual fall in the night temperature,” says Kashyapi.

Across Maharashtra, farmers are complaining about the rain that has impacted their crops. Kashyapi said kharif crops have suffered due to the uneven distribution of rainfall. “The country has received above normal rain. At times, the quantum was higher and this impacted the standing kharif crops during their specific growth stages,” he said.
