The Pune police Tuesday imposed restrictions around the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre in the city’s Erandwane area, saying the steps were taken as patients and relatives were unable to access the institute in the recent days.

Following the death of Tanisha Bhise, 30, after alleged negligence at the Deenanath Hospital, political and social outfits have staged protests, with some members climbing the terrace of the building. The police had a hard time trying to control traffic and to ensure patients and their relatives entered the hospital without any trouble.

A press release issued by Ranjan Kumar Sharma, Joint Commissioner of Police, Tuesday said no one other than patients and relatives would be allowed to enter within 100 metres of the hospital. Sharma said in the order that other than patients, ambulances, police, staff and doctors, only a single person would be allowed to enter the hospital premises.

“The usage of loudspeakers, and any inflammatory messages, posters, pamphlets being distributed are also prohibited,” Sharma said in the release in Marathi.

Bhise, the wife of BJP MLC Amit Gorkhe’s secretary, died on March 30 after delivering twin girls. Her family claimed that Deenanath Hospital asked for Rs 10 lakh as a deposit before admission. They moved to another hospital, but Bhise passed away post-delivery.

A special committee, formed to investigate the charges, held the hospital guilty of negligence.
