Pune and its surrounding areas will experience extreme weather for the next five days. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 40-42 degrees Celsius, the India Meteorological Department said on Thursday.
Over the last few days, Pune and its surrounding areas have seen the mercury crossing the 40 degrees mark more than once. The temperatures in Koregaon Park, Magarpatta and some other areas have crossed 43 degrees Celsius more than once. Even Pashan, which usually reports lower-than-average temperatures, witnessed 40 degrees Celsius. The exceptionally high temperature with no cloud, rain or wind has already made the heat insufferable for the city.
Medha Khole, head of weather forecasting at the IMD, said that while the city might not technically see a heat wave till May 6, the maximum temperature would likely hover between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius.
This high temperature comes as Baramati, the all-important Lok Sabha constituency, votes on May 7. Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP stalwart Sharad Pawar, is pitted against Sunetra Pawar, wife of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
Despite the heat, campaigning is in full swing with each faction of the NCP trying to reach out to the last voter.
The IMD has advised the public not to venture out between 11.30 am and 4.30 pm. Enough hydration, wearing of light, white clothing and avoidance of long exposure to open air are also advised.
