As illegal eateries continue to crop up along city roads leading to heavy traffic and unhygienic conditions, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to develop six more food plazas across the city in addition to the one proposed at Sarasbaug.

Over the last year, the civic administration intensified action on eateries encroaching on city roads and footpaths and seized 1,052 cooking gas cylinders while taking action against illegal food stalls. PMC has been acting against existing food stalls near Sarasbaug for encroaching on the road and will develop a food plaza to resolve the issue permanently.

“The administrative process to finalise the contract for developing a food walk plaza near Sarasbaug at a cost of Rs 16 crore is in its final stages and the actual work will start soon,” said a civic officer of PMC’s anti-encroachment department.

The offficer said that the PMC also commenced the process to develop a food walk plaza in Sambhaji Garden at a cost of Rs one crore. Foods stall operate at Sambhaji Garden as well.

“The planning for a food plaza at an amenity space in Survey Number 66/5 in Baner is underway,” he said.

PMC has also planned food plazas at Gunjan-Shastrinagar chowk, near Funtime on Sinhagad Road, Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park on Satara road and Nanded City on Sinhagad road. “The opinion of the civic road department has been sought to develop the proposed food plaza considering traffic concerns in the area,” the civic officer said.

The food plaza will have stalls and seating spaces as well as a children’s play area where citizens can spend quality time with family and friends. The place will be maintained to stay hygienic and facilities of public toilets will be provided. There will be a dedicated place for parking vehicles.
