Pune and its neighbourhood will wake up to a partly cloudy sky on Saturday and Sunday, with the cloud cover partially increasing towards the afternoon and evening. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) says that it is very likely that there will be some very light to light rain in isolated areas.

Cyclone Montha is weakening fast in intensity but there is still enough moisture in the air in the north and northeast of Maharashtra, due to which isolated very light to light rain is likely across the state, except the southern parts, till November 1. The warm, sunny days leading to cloudy sky in the afternoon or evening time make thunderstorms and lightning a possibility.

“The remnant of the cyclonic storm Montha has passed via southeast Vidarbha, then central Chhattisgarh towards Jharkhand and Bihar. It is slowly becoming insignificant for Maharashtra and the existing moisture is still sufficient to cause isolated very light to light rain,” says Anupam Kashyapi, former IMD head of weather forecasting.

He added that the depression persisting over the Arabian Sea is slowly moving towards Gujarat and supplying moisture to that area including the northwest Maharashtra districts, such as Palghar, Nandurbar and Dhule. From November 3 to 5, the moisture concentration will increase in central Maharashtra and Konkan and even in Pune.

“This will create conditions of isolated light rainfall in those areas. Other than that, the chances of rain due to Cyclone Montha in Maharashtra will reduce further after the current 24 hours, ending Saturday morning, after the reduction of the moisture from the atmosphere,” adds Kashyapi.

Large parts of the state were under a yellow alert till Friday, with thunderstorm, lightning and light to moderate rainfall in districts, such as Jalgaon, Palghar, Thane and Nandurbar. Pune, Ahilyanagar, Kolhapur, Satara and the ghat regions have been witnessing thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall.

In Pune, there were short periods of moderate to intense spells of rain in different parts of the city on Thursday – the highest being 27.4 mm in Lohegaon and Lavale receiving 4 mm. After that, the city has been relatively dry. The max temperature was around 27 degree Celsius and the minimum around 19 degree Celsius on Friday.
