Preventive detention: Cops arrest six

The Anti Extortion Cell of Pune police crime branch has detained notorious gangster Prakash alias Bhau Laxman Chavan (35) and his five accomplices as a preventive action in the view of Lok Sabha elections.

The Anti Extortion Cell of Pune police crime branch has detained notorious gangster Prakash alias Bhau Laxman Chavan (35) and his five accomplices as a preventive action in the view of Lok Sabha elections.

Chavan,a resident of Pimpri is on police record in 13 offences of murder,dacoity and riots. The police said that Chavan operates in the industrial belt from Pimpri to Chakan. He was also booked under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act by the Satara police.

His accomplices detained by the police were identified as Rahul Narayan Sadamat (25),Mahesh Shripati Bhosale (30),both from Nigdi,Manoj Mohan Shelar (26),Amit Vinayak Meshram (30),both from Pimpri and Krishna Rama Waghmare (28) of Bhosari. The police said that Waghmare was earlier booked in a murder case. A police team led by inspector Kishor Jadhav had detained them. The police said that no fresh offence was registered against the gangsters.

The action was taken as part of drive against gangsters for maintaining law and order during the election period.
