Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in the city around 11 am on Tuesday, and will go on to perform puja at Dagdusheth Mandir.

At 11.45 am, the PM will be conferred the Lokmanya Tilak National Award. At 12.45 pm, he will flag off metro trains on two extended routes and inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of various development projects.

The inauguration of the two metro stretches is an important step towards realising the PM’s vision to provide citizens with modern and environment-friendly mass rapid urban transport systems across the country, officials said. The design of some metro stations on the route draw inspiration from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The metro stations — Chhatrapati Sambhaji Udyan and Deccan Gymkhana — are designed to resemble headgear worn by soldiers of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj – also known as ‘mavala pagadi’.

The Shivaji Nagar underground metro station has a distinctive design which reminds one of forts built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Another unique feature is that the Civil Court metro station is one of the deepest metro stations in the country, having the deepest point at 33.1 metres.

The station roof is made in such a manner that direct sunlight falls on the platform, officials said. The PM will also inaugurate the ‘waste to energy plant’ of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).

Moving ahead towards the mission of achieving ‘housing for all’, the PM will handover more than 1,280 houses built by PCMC under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. He will also hand over more than 2,650 PMAY houses built by PMC. He will also lay the foundation stone of around 1,190 PMAY houses to be built by PCMC, and of over 6,400 houses built by Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority.

The Lokmanya Tilak National Award, that will be conferred to the PM, was constituted by Tilak Smarak Mandir Trust in 1983, to honour the legacy of Lokmanya Tilak. The award is given to people who have worked for the progress and development of a nation, and whose contribution can only be looked upon as remarkable and extraordinary. It is presented every year on August 1, Lokmanya Tilak’s death anniversary. The PM will become the 41st recipient of the award.
