Keeping in line with the directions of the Union and the state government, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)  has started appointing dedicated staff for the Population Census to be held next year.

Additional Municipal Commissioner of PMC Omprakash Diwate said, “Appointment of 36 civic staff has been made for starting the process of Population Census to be carried out next year.”

To begin with, the PMC’s Census department will start demarcating Enumeration Block (EB)—basic building block for enumeration—in the electoral panel area of civic bodies. “The civic staff has been asked to prepare a detailed list of manpower available in schools, colleges and educational insitutes, along with addresses of the manpower, so that they can be deputed for field work during the Census period,” said Diwate adding this will help in providing training to the staff for Census work.

The Population Census is carried out in the country in every 10 years. The exercise was to be undertaken in 2021 but plans were put on hold following the the breakout the Covid-19 pandemic. The Population Census compiles detailed data of every citizen alongwith economic status. The Population Census to be undertaken next year is also likely to factor in caste. Data of Population Census helps the government draft policies and welfare schemes.
