A Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course was conducted at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) recently. The course is an Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) initiative and has been modeled on the lines of the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) course.
The Department of Paediatrics,AFMC,and Command Hospital,regularly conduct such courses every year in association with the IAP. This year the course was conducted at the newly established Central Skills Lab at the college. The course was launched by chief guest Air Marshal B Keshav Rao,AVSM,Director and Commandant,AFMC.
Addressing the gathering,Air Marshal Rao stressed the need for resuscitation courses to enhance the knowledge and skills of the care providers,particularly in view of the regular review of the CPR guidelines every five years.
Dr Dhananjay Kashikar,president,IAP (Pune chapter),welcomed the teaching faculty of senior pediatricians from Pune,Mumbai,Aurangabad,Sangli and Kolhapur,who are nationally qualified instructors for PALS .The workshop was attended by 36 delegates including post graduates,pediatricians and emergency medicine physicians from Pune and neighboring districts. The participants were rotated between various skill stations for hands on training on basic life support,airway,vascular access and arrhythmias.
They were also moved between different learning stations covering core paediatric emergencies where they applied the resuscitation team concept.
The teaching- learning sessions were followed by a written test and evaluation of acquired skills. The PALS course offers a certificate with a validity of three years to successful candidates.
