Eagerly awaited by students for the rollicking entertainment they provide, some TV reality shows, which have been their favourites for quite some time, have gone on air at a time when students have been busy preparing for their year-end examinations. Be it the innovative, entertaining dance moves in Jhalak Dikhla Ja and Dance India Dance or the scheming and plotting thats a part of life in such shows as Splitsvilla and Roadies, they all prove to be irresistible for examinees. With the exam season on,students find it tough to keep at bay the riveting treat the reality shows have to offer.
For Niharika Singh,a student of the Deccan Education Society, there couldnt have been a worse time for the new shows to go on air. My examination begins on April 9 and since Ive been busy completing the syllabus during the past couple of months, theres been no time to catch up with any TV, she says. Roadies is my most favourite show and I wouldnt have missed it for anything in the normal course of things. But now, although I so want to,I just cant get myself to keep updated about the latest plotting and politics that goes on during the show, Singh adds.
Another lament is that although producers know the exact timing of the exams, they still schedule new shows at this time of the year. I mean, why couldnt they have postponed the launch of the shows by a couple of weeks,if not later. They know that their prime audience is to be found among the youth,i.e. among the schoolgoers and undergraduates. Yet,they decide to start the new shows as this time of the year, laments Shiwangi Sharma, who is studying in FY at MMCC and whose ongoing exams get over on April 11.
Splitsvilla is my most favourite show on Indian telly. I just cant get enough of the devious, calculating ways of the participants. Add to it,the shows format has also been changed now and that spices things up further, she adds.
The reality dance shows are another major source from where TV audiences draw their daily entertainment. The couple of popular dance shows on air are a great hit with dance enthusiasts. As Shashank Pethe,a student of SY,BBA at MIT puts it,See,for me,the one respite from my studies, which are hectic,to say the least, comes from catching up with these dance reality shows. My favourite is Jhalak Dikhla Ja,even Dance India Dance is a good show, although not in the same league as Jhalak. So,when I realised I wont be able to catch up with my favourite shows since my exams are on,it was a huge blow. But as much as I want to change things, theres just nothing I can do about this, says Pethe.
