The city police are still investigating the cause of death of 24-year-old Sanjeevkumar Shivaji Kamat, the army jawan who was found dead on Sunday afternoon at the Southern Command officer’s mess on East Street.

“Prima facie,it looka like a case of suicide. Kamat allegedly killed himself with his INSAS rifle at around 1 pm on Sunday while he was stationed at the Southern Command officer’s mess. A police team immediately reached the spot after the incident and found that he was sitting dead on his chair, while his rifle was on the ground. We checked his pockets but did not find any suicide note; he had a mobile phone with him. Kumar had sustained serious injuries in his stomach and spinal cord as he probably shot himself from point blank range,” said AV Gaikwad,ACP.

Gaikwad said that the police have seized Kamat’s rifle and the bullet which was removed from his body by doctors. “They have been sent for ballistic tests. Once the report comes out,we will find out whether the same rifle that he was carrying has injured him or somebody shot him,” said Gaikwad.

Police inspector Vitthal Rane of the Cantonment police station said that Kamat was attached to the 182 pioneer units and is a resident of Ramdin Bagan village,Sanchi taluka in Jharkhand. Kumar was a bachelor. His parents have been informed about the incident and will come to the city to collect his body on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the police have also seized Kumar’s mobile phone and are in the process of collecting his call details.

“After knowing the call details,we would know who all Kumar was keeping in touch with. We have also seized all his belongings from the barrack he was living in for further investigations,” said Rane.

When asked what could have led to Kumar’s alleged suicide,Gaikwad said,“ We rule out any workrelated stress. The reason behind the suicide could be anything, from family problems to psychological issues. We will find out more details only after speaking to his parents.”
