The Pune City Traffic Control Branch has announced a new set of changes in the traffic flow at Pune University Chowk. One of the busiest traffic junctions in the city, will see these changes will be in force from Monday in order to ease congestion and will be in addition to the existing circular traffic plan that is in force over the last two years.
The Pune University junction sees traffic flowing to and from Pashan, Baner, Aundh and the combined traffic of Ganeshkhind Road and Senapati Bapat Road, making it the busiest traffic junction in the city.
The junction is currently undergoing massive work on the integrated project front, to construct a double storey flyover including a metro line along with grade separators and an underpass. According to a primary estimate of traffic police, anywhere from 3 to 3.5 lakh vehicles pass through this junction on an average on a working day.
Over the last year, Pune police have implemented a circular one way from University Square, Pashan Road, Pune Rural SP Office, Abhimanshree Pashan Chowk, Abhimanshree Baner Chowk, Baner Road, Sakal Nagar and again back to University Square. This circular traffic flow will remain in force as long as work on the Metro and flyover at Pune University Square is ongoing.
On Sunday, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Shashikant Borate issued an order about traffic changes that will be implemented from Monday, January 15. The vehicles coming from Shivajinagar and going ahead of Pune University Chowk toward Pashan will take the separate left lane that starts before the pillar in the chowk.
The vehicles going towards Baner will use the left lane of Baner Road. Meanwhile, the vehicles coming from Pashan to Pune University Chowk will continue to take the Abhimanshree Society Road to reach Baner Road first and then come to the University Chowk.
It can be recalled that the two old flyovers — one at the Pune University junction and one in front of E-Square theater were demolished by Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) in 2020 after it was jointly decided by the PMRDA and Pune Municipal Corporation to construct a two-storey flyover with the top floor for an elevated metro rail corridor to connect Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar and the first floor for vehicular traffic.
