Officials in the Pune district administration said that the project will be inaugurated by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, among others.
Originally slated for completion in April this year, the project has encountered a series of delays. Its initial deadline was set for August 2021 but a variety of challenges, including land acquisition, traffic management, and the Covid-19 pandemic, disrupted the timeline. The removal of the previous bridge at the site, identified as a contributor to traffic congestion, took place in October 2022.
Officials said that the project was extremely complex as it is on an extremely busy national highway and the work had to be done minimising disruptions to traffic flow. “The overnight demolition of the old bridge and swift debris clearance were formidable tasks. Land acquisition challenges prompted some landowners to approach the Supreme Court. However, with collaborative efforts from the Pune Municipal Corporation, Pune Police, the National Highways Authority of India, and local authorities, the project stands on the brink of culmination,” Pune Collector Rajesh Deshmukh said.
