The Nationalist Congress Partys (NCP) city unit has launched a public awareness drive against corruption in the city under which the party would undertake an initiative to bring transparency in working of government offices and make the processes more people-friendly.
In first stage of the initiative we would undertake programmes to spread awareness on functioning and procedures in government offices where maximum delays occur and have maximum complaints. NCP workers would be available at important offices such as Food Grain Distribution Office,RTO,Traffic Control Branch to facilitate works and solve problems faced by the citizen, said Vandana Chavan,NCP city president.
From September 12 to 27 in all important offices in the city NCP workers and committee members would be available 11 am to 2 pm and look after the citizens complaints and solve their problems. The helpline numbers would also be displayed in each government office so that citizens can call and ask for help, she said.
According to Chavan, this initiative will have two positive outcomes. Firstly,it would directly help citizens get their work done at the earliest and secondly it would put indirect pressure on officials to do their work efficiently, knowing they are being watched. The helpline numbers will be widely pubicised so as to reach the maximum people and people could avail of the services even after the first phase of the drive.
Chavan said that there are strong laws to curb corruption but they are not being efficiently used. The fact is that in last two-and-a-half months not a single complaint has been registered in the divisional office which shows how unaware we are about the prevailing system to tackle the corruption. Anti Corruption Law,Right to Information are very strong and useful laws but we need to make people aware of them, said Chavan.
On September 9,officials will inform the citizens about functioning of various government departments.
