The clock strikes seven and a horde of people head towards a 15 by 15 space. While the lucky amongst the flock get entry, the ones queuing up have to pacify their growling stomachs for another 15-20 minutes, the usual waiting period at Idlicious in Aundh, that in six months has an envious clientele for the fare it doles out.
So when Mohit Sukhani starts from Model Colony early in the morning to binge on a sumptuous breakfast at Idilicious the three km distance is not a detterant at all. It feels it is from your own moms kitchen, says Sukhani.
The street that falls silent between 2:30 and 7 pm springs to life the moment Idlacious starts functioning. In fact many a times we can spot a cluster of people hanging around the joint even before it opens, says Mayuresh Wadekar one of the residents of the street and also a regular customer of the shack.
Idlicious has been started by husband and wife duo of Anjali and Michael Pokish, both retired government officials with a shared passion of running a restaurant.
Anjali, who after four years of the business even today maintains the ritual of soaking dal for idlli by her own hands, says that the specialty of the food at Idillicious is the personal touch. We have lived in south for over 20 years and since both of us are foodies we learnt even the smallest intricacies of making south Indian dishes, she elaborates.
Regular south Indian customers also put the seal of approval to the food. There are few youngsters from South who live here. They got their parents to Idilicious and the parents expressed their gratitude to us and said that they could at least stop worrying about their kids getting proper south Indian food, she says.
From medhu wada and dosa to tasty home made idllis, the south Indian feel stays intact in all the dishes. The famous filter coffee too is served in typical south Indian style.
Idlicious recently opened another branch in Baner. The Baner branch was opened some months back. My son a hotel student has joined us and business is expanding! Touchwood, says she.
