Mohalla committees get PPI pat

Professionals Party of India on Saturday felicitated the mohalla committees for their exemplary work in their respective mohallas in terms of dealing with crucial civic issues.

Professionals Party of India (PPI) on Saturday felicitated the mohalla committees for their exemplary work in their respective mohallas in terms of dealing with crucial civic issues.

In our 30 years of work this is the first time we have been felicitated for our contribution to mohalla committee, said Shyamala Desai of Model Colony Parisar Sudharna Samitee (MCPSS). This was a sentiment shared not just by her,but by all the five mohalla committees who were felicitated on the occasion.

Appreciating the efforts of committees municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak said,“As responsible citizens we all need to come forward and participate in local governance. A very good example in this direction is the level of participation of US citizens in their local issues.”

Girish Deshpande, spokesperson,PPI,said,“By felicitating them we just want to motivate and encourage other mohalla committees to come forward and solve their problems rather than sitting back and blaming the system.”

Desai believes that having a separate sub-committee dealing with various issues ranging from gardens, garbage, children’s playground to security issues helped them organise their work better. She said MCPSS has reclaimed and saved various lakes and water bodies in the model colony area.

Sathya Mani from NIBM Road Residents Forum said,“Apart from our regular work,we also conducted first aid certificate courses. If at least 10 members are trained,it is of great help in times of emergencies,”

Gita Vir,president,Boat Club Road Mohalla Committee, said,“Members of this area have been running garbage segregation and vermin-compost pit at household levels since 1986. Since 1995 residents have not bought manure for their plants.”
