Mobile manners

Hello,I can’t hear you….’ The next time you say these words out loud, pay attention to your surroundings as you just might end up irritating those present. While the mobile phone may have made life easier for us in a number of ways,it also has,at the same time, become a cause of nuisance. Sensing this, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has come up with a series of brand new guidelines of mobile decorum for mobile phone users.

We tried to delve into what Pune’s citizens think about manners to be observed while talking on their mobile phones.

“I prefer to keep my mobile on silent mode, when in a concert or a cinema hall. I also speak very softly and when in a group, walk out to attend a call,” says Swarda Angal,a professional dancer. While a soft voice, for the benefit of people around you,is desirable while talking on the mobile,it is also equally necessary to be decent and courteous. “Speaking in a low voice is one of my top concerns when I talk on the phone,” states actor Devika Daftardar.

Sai Salkhare,a student, echoes Devika’s opinion and says that people talking loudly and using abusive language irritates her. However, keeping their mobiles silent in public places is an unwritten rule that most Pune denizens seem to follow. “I generally keep my phone silent while I step out of home,” says Vineet Pinto,an employee at Synygy. His voice finds support in Amrit and Sai,both students,as they say that phones should be on silent mode inside classrooms.

A phone call is a private affair and most people don’t like to overhear private conversations. Divya Subramani of SunGard Technical Services mentions that she goes out and talks when she gets a call during office hours. Vineet S informs that he avoids taking calls when in a group. However,in the event that the call is urgent,he prefers to walk out of the room and speak in private.
