Along with his love for music,city-based musician Sanjeev Pandkar teaches enthusiastic youngsters who want to learn how to play various instruments. So,while taking these classes,he would always keep an eye out for those few students in his class who took music more seriously than a hobby. About three years ago,he found three students who were as passionate about music as he was in his younger days.

So,Pandkar came upon an idea to get together with them and jam at a restaurant, since he wanted the youngsters to have a good exposure. That’s how they took the stage at Jazz By The Bay three years ago. Little did Pandkar know that the experiment would end up in the formation of a band.

He recalls that after thoroughly enjoying their first performance, which was appreciated by the restaurant management as well as the audience, the four musicians decided that they must play together more often. “We knew we couldn’t stop at that. The music we produced bound us together and made us get back for more — over and over again. We started looking for a name for our band and thought of some random names,”says the 43-year-old. The random name-finding session ended with one that got everyone’s consent — Moonbeans.

Besides Pandkar, the band comprises Bharghav Jhangle on the guitar and vocals,Sunder Pelapur on bass guitar and Harshad on the keyboard. With new member Trupti Pottar as a vocalist, the band will be dishing out covers of some all-time favourite tracks by Alanis Morissette,Rolling Stones,Coldplay,Eagles,Elton John,Bee Gees,Fleetwood Mac,Billy Joel,Paul McCartney and The Police.

“Songs by Michael Jackson and Cold Play are still found on the playlists of youngsters; they are masterpieces and still hot favourites. Even though we will be doing covers of their hits,we add our own style to it and perform our version of their songs,” says Pandkar.

The band improvises songs either by adding chorus to the mid section, dimming beats or even including instrumental solos during the songs. Though they focus on re-inventing covers, they have also written two original tracks. “This is just the beginning. We are working on a full-fledged album, even though the progress is slow and steady,” says Pandkar.

The band will perform at Hard Rock cafe today
