Musician couple Dhananjay Kharwandikar and Kavita will present compositions inspired by the words of Kabir

Bura jo dekhan main chala, bura naa milya koye,Jo munn khoja apnaa,to mujhse bura naa koye (When I set out looking for the wicked,I did not meet a single one; when I searched my own soul,I found there is no one more wicked than me). The famous dohas of Kabir bring back memories of sitting in the Hindi class with the teacher decoding their meaning and hoping some of us would take back lessons for life. Often, students would mug them to get past the examinations and then move on,finding little that connected to their own lives.

But musician Dhananjay Kharwandikar is set to change that. Sharing that couplets are not all that Kabir wrote,Kharwandikar says Kabir’s panths (scripts) easily connect with our everyday lives. He has composed songs based on these panths and is organising a musical show to spread Kabir’s philosophy through songs. During the concert,he will also explain the panths that,he claims, inspire him to lead a selfless life.

“The path that Kabir followed can be led by people even today. This realisation inspired me to organise musical shows based on his writings,” says Dhananjay, who — for more than 20 years — has been composing and performing songs based on the philosophical writings of Thukharam,Ramdas,Namdev and Gyaneshwar.

Teaming up with his wife Kavita,a classical singer trained by Pandit Babanrao Halbankar,Dhananjay says he doesn’t re-use compositions for any of his shows but composes new songs each time he performs.

“This show is more like a light music form with a classical base. My aim is to create awareness in the audience on how to lead life,” says Kavita. Talking about singing her husband’s compositions, she says that anyone can sing the songs that have already been sung many times, but it is a challenge to learn and perform newly composed songs and this excites her. “It helps me create my identity,” she says.

About the upcoming show in the city,Dhananjay says he will present 12 panths including ghazals such as Aman hai ishq mastana,Jattan bin mirgan khet ujara and Jini jini bini chadariya.
