When you visit someones house and find the house well kept,who do you give the credit to? Obviously,to the lady of the house. But what if there aint any lady in the house? We are talking about the bachelors who stay alone but maintain their home in a perfect way. Its a general perception that if there is a bachelor staying alone in the house,it is ought to be in a mess with clothes here and newspaper lying there,towel on the floor,cigarette buds in some corner,CDs DVDs scattered,and if there was a party the night before,you can imagine a little more with beer bottles and leftover food in the kitchen. But contrary to the common perception,houses of some of the city bachelors can make a women doubt her capabality.
Thirty-year-old,Sinha stays in rented two-bedroom flat on NIBM Road. While entering his house,you can feel that Sinha not only has a good taste but also knowledge of interiors. There is a generous use of bright colours in the house – in curtains,cushions,bedsheets,flower vase and other decoratives in every corner of the house. I feel colours give the house a welcoming look, he says. There is an Indian sitting area (baithak) in the drawing room,with embroidered sheet and cushions. Complementing it is a orange colour floor-length curtain. Since Sinha is very fond of antiques and traditional show pieces,one can find a number of them in his house. Like an old time box (sandook) in the centre of the drawing room or different shapes of pots (matka) in the corners.
I travel a lot and whenever I come across something really nice,which I feel would look good in my house,I pick it up. As of now I have already booked my own flat and almost got done with its interiors,so I have stopped shopping, says Sinha. Working as a senior manager at a UK-based insurance company,Sinha is very fond of lampshades and candles and dislikes glass,metal and plastic items in his house.
All this and more,leaves you wondering if he has done some professional course in interior designing? Well a no from him answers all your doubts No formal training but I have got a style of my own,I also read books on interiors and surf Internet for the additional information,he adds. Sinhas skills have become so popular amongst his friends that he has been offered to do the interiors of two of his friends.
Everything about his house speaks volumes about Chaudharys interests. His three-BHK apartment is about style,luxury and comfort all at the same time. Working as a senior support engineer,with Convergys,25-year-old Chaudhary is a music and movie freak. The drawing room has sophisticated but premium class furniture. There is a floor cushion,two big sofa chairs,a centre table,TV and a DVD player. He has added that extra zing to his master bedroom by installing home theatre in it. The bedroom boasts of a wrought iron king size bed,with contrast colour curtains that complement the subtle tone of the walls and provides richness to the bedroom. Most of my time on weekends is spent in my bedroom watching movies. I have spent around Rs 60,000 on the home theatre, he says.
Like Sinha,even Chaudhary is very particular about keeping his house spotlessly clean. He adds,Whether its my kitchen,the dining area,the drawing room or the bedroom,you wont find anything kept in an improper way or place. I have given strict instructions to my maidservant to take care of the hygiene in the house. While she does everything but I supervise that its done in the way I want.
Unlike Sinha,you may not find too many decorative items in Sens house but what will appeals one the most is the simplicity with which its been kept. One look at the house and you can make out that Sen is a cleanliness freak and an organised person. What strikes you most is that everything has got its place and is in order. Whether it is his books,utensils,CDs/DVDs each and every item is neatly arranged. The minimal use of furniture gives this one-BHK flat also,a spacious look. The place should give a homely feeling. One of the reasons I dont share my flat with anyone is that I cannot stay in a dirty place, says Sinha. Like other bachelors,Sen also calls his friends to his place on weekends but he makes sure that before they leave everything is kept properly.

Sen not only takes care of the house nicely but also does everyday cooking on his own. Working as a senior recruiter at Quinstreet Software India Ltd,Sen spends some extra time in cleaning the house,dusting and arranging his cupboard on weekends.
Sen is planning to book his own flat in coming few months. He has got few ideas in mind about the look of his future house and is planning to hire a professional to implement them.
