Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare J P Nadda on Saturday said that healthcare in India has grown beyond the curative aspect and that the country now inculcates preventive and promotive healthcare. He was speaking at the inauguration of the Centre for Nephrology and Urology at Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Centre at Lavale, Pune on Saturday.

Nadda claimed that before 2017, healthcare policies in India were curative, but now under Ayushman Arogya Mandir, the country has moved from a selective approach to healthcare to deliver a comprehensive range of services spanning preventive, promotive, curative, rehabilitative and palliative care.

He said, “The healthcare in India has grown beyond the curative aspect. We now inculcate preventive and promotive healthcare. It has now become possible with the introduction of systems like Aayusmaan Bharat and the establishment of 30,000 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs under the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS).” The target of the Medical Council of India is to create 1,75,000 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs in the immediate future to deliver comprehensive Primary Health Care, he added.

Nadda also expressed the requirement for free and accessible healthcare services and said, “Free healthcare services that are provided by hospitals such as this one are necessary to make healthcare more accessible to the community.” Nadda addressed the quality of education in India and remarked that the country should see an increase in medical seats up to 75,000.

“India will produce exemplary doctors not only to send abroad, but also to work within the nation.” Nadda commended the university hospital for being an all-female institution, urging more such initiatives.
